Thoughtful Tuesday: Are You Pacing Yourself Well?

Posted on: April 5, 2011

At what rate are you progressing toward your goals? Are you moving along steadily, or is it stop and go? The pace at which you start is typically the pace you will keep up. This is why I forewarned you yesterday about starting off too fast or too slow. You want to move forward at a pace that you can consistently keep up with.

Have you determined how fast or slow you want to progress?  I ask this because only you will know what you’re ready for and when you’re ready for it. If something comes along too swiftly, before you’ve had a chance to prepare, then you will most certainly miss out on an advancement opportunity. However, if you move along too fast, you might bypass something…or someone…that wasn’t quite ready for you. (I just had an a ha! moment typing that. Wow! Okay, back to blogging.) Granted, it won’t always be this way, but keep that in the back of your mind when you start to excessively speed up or slack off.

The key is to find YOUR pace. Not the pace of your mentor. Not the pace of those that have blazed the trail before you. Not the pace that your family, friends/associates/colleagues can keep up with. The pace at which you move needs to be the pace at which you NEED to move. Not want…not desire…but NEED to move. If you’re overly excited, you’ll want to take off like a bat out of heck! If you’re hesitant, then you will put it off for as long as possible. Neither one of those situations will create an ideal pace.

Now don’t think that once you pick a pace you can keep it there. That is not what I’m saying at all. There may be times when you’ll have to speed up or slow down, but in general you should constantly be moving along…FORWARD, mind you…at a decent pace. And yes, I had to put emphasis on moving FORWARD. You’d be surprised at how many people move  BACKWARDS and don’t even know it! That’s something we’ll discuss in the future…possibly next week…but movement isn’t always good; especially if you’re moving in the wrong direction. Can you imagine switching into overdrive only to discover you’re going the wrong way? That would suck in more ways than one!

As you go throughout your day, contemplate your pace. Better yet, create some mile markers and determine when you should reach them. That will let you know if you’re moving too fast, too slow, or just right. While it may seem like neither could, would, or even should be a bad thing it all depends on your goals, your timing, and how prepared you are. Those are the main indicators that will tell you if your pace is good or bad, not the pace itself. Don’t put yourself in the mindset that it’s okay to move fast, slow, or not at all. If you’re ready for it, your momentum will naturally pick up. If you’re not, your momentum will naturally slow down. The key word is NATURALLY. If you’re forcing it or forbidding it, then something is wrong. Find it, fix it, and return to your regulated pace.

This isn’t a tortoise and hare race. This is your life. You will reach your intended destination when it’s time. Stay on course, follow the speed signs, and you’ll get there happy, healthy, stress-free, and on time!
