Spotlight on HIV: As I Die Slowly Virtual Book Tour

Posted on: March 7, 2012

Hey Rockstars!

For the past few days I have been touring the Internet talking about HIV and AIDS – a subject that doesn’t get much air time, but still needs to be addressed. The initial reason for this virtual book tour was to promote my new novel As I Die Slowly. That is still the premise behind the tour, but during my stops I’ve come to realize one eerily similar connection.

No one wants to talk about HIV or AIDS.

And my question is: Why not?

How many people will have to become infected before we say something? How many people will have to die before we educate ourselves? How many children will have to lose their mothers or their fathers – or their own lives – before we start a revolt against the disease!?

It’s like everyone has this attitude of, “Well it doesn’t affect me so why should I care?” Well, newsflash buddy…IT DOES AFFECT YOU!!! Why? Because your last partner’s last partner had a secret fling with their partner who also sleeps with someone else that may or may not have contracted it from their partner who shoots drugs with their partner!

You see where I’m going with this?!

HIV is not just a “gay man’s disease” and it never was. Here’s what I want you to do. Take this quiz and see how many answers you get right:

1) How many types of HIV are in existence?

2) When was HIV first discovered in the United States? Where did it originate from and how is it believed to have come to the states?

3) How many ways has it been PROVEN to contract HIV? What are they?

4) In what ways can you NOT contract HIV?

5) At what T-cell count are you officially diagnosed with AIDS?

Bonus) Does HIV/AIDS kill you?

I’m going to answer the bonus question first. NO! HIV/AIDS does NOT kill you! What kills you is your lack of knowledge about HIV/AIDS! If you knew better you would know that people who succumb to the disease die from other illnesses/diseases that were COMPLICATED by HIV/AIDS…not the HIV/AIDS itself! It kills your immune system which makes it harder to fight off foreign bacteria and viruses. A common cold can claim your life if you’re infected with HIV or AIDS. But you wouldn’t know that unless you EDUCATED yourself!

Yes, I’m yelling because I’m PISSED OFF that so many beautiful, talented, young people had to die because we fuckin’ refuse to educate ourselves! Take the blinders off people! You can’t fight something that you refuse to acknowledge is there! It’s 2012 – 31 years since the first HIV case surfaced – and we’re still holding our breath and afraid to touch people like it was 1981 all over again! We’ve got to do better. I’m doing my part. Are you doing yours?
