Sometimes you just need to admit you need help!

Posted on: March 12, 2013

This hit me in both a personal and professional way so allow me to break them both down to you:

PROFESSIONAL: Regardless of your occupation, education, or skill set we all need help with advancing and improving our careers. It’s nothing to be ashamed of and there’s no reason why you need to feel like you have it all figured out. This especially goes for us creative artists. Our mediums are non-existent until we bring them into existence. Yet sometimes we’re “blocked” or “uninspired” and nothing comes to us. It is in these times when you need to find someone who can help you open that blockage. You should seek out someone who inspires you whether it’s through their words, encouragement, or lame attempts to be funny when it’s really just embarrassing. (Hey, we all have our quirks!) Instead of sinking deeper into your blockage, reach your hand up for someone to pull you out.

If you can’t find someone directly there are other ways to reach out for help. You can join a support group for artists in your field – or if you’re not the creative type you can still find a support group for encouragement and career assistance. You can also attend workshops and seminars that will increase your skills. Sometimes an increased skill set is a huge motivational boost that will have you doing things you never thought you could do. Then there are books, audios, lessons…anything that will get you in the flow and guide you to the solution you seek. Whatever road you choose just know that the moment you humble yourself and ask for help is the very moment help will arrive – sometimes in an unexpected way from an unexpected source – and your troubles will begin to effortlessly reverse.

**SHAMELESS PLUG** If you’re a writer, artist, photographer, or other creative medium and you need help with such blockages feel free to visit my site! I can help you release those blocks and get those creative juices flowing again!

PERSONAL: Now this one is tricky because the ego has a tendency to involve itself when it comes to asking for help. But before I get into discussing asking for personal help let me make this statement. The ego is NOT your enemy! Despite what others may preach the ego is simply your protective Self. The only reason why the ego acts the way it does is to ensure its survival. There are so many teachers, coaches, gurus, experts, etc. out there that preach the ego is evil or that it stands for Edging God Out (cute, but not accurate). Here’s my own personal belief – and this is just mine and, no, you don’t have to adopt it – the ego is like your bodyguard. If it experiences someone or something that it is not familiar with it WILL put up defenses to protect you and itself. The ego is your over-reacting friend. Sure, logically you know the person and/or situation and know it’s harmless, but the ego doesn’t know that because it’s never experienced it before. It just wants to survive. It fears that it will die, but the ego is apart of you so unless you die then the ego will still be very much alive…it just doesn’t know that. So all you need to do is ensure the ego that it will survive, you do care about and appreciate it, and that you will protect it as much as it protects you. (I had this conversation with someone at work today. He reminded me of these points. Thanks, Mike!)

Okay, now that the ego has been acknowledged let’s talk about asking for personal help. There is this stigma with a lot of people that you simply DO NOT ask for help. You either figure it out, or you pray on it, or you leave it alone altogether. All three suggestions are okay, but they are not stand-alone solutions.

Yeah, I just pissed some religious folks off with that one! But, as usual, hear me out before lighting the torches!

See, here’s the thing. When you need help that means there is something you don’t know or can’t do on your own. There is nothing wrong with asking for help. In fact, in order to advance to the next level or stage of your life someone somewhere has to help you, just like you have to help someone or something advance in life. You may not know you’re doing it, but we are an inter-dependent Universe. We all help each other. It’s what we’re created to do – to be of help and of service to others.

This Universal purpose applies to everyone. While we strive to help and serve others, someone somewhere is helping and serving us. And if they aren’t helping you when you need it…well…ASK FOR IT! Don’t just sit idly by, twiddling your thumbs in prayer and meditation waiting for a solution to fall in your lap. That solution could be – and usually is – a phone call/text/verbal expression away. I truly believe that God/Universe/Spirit/Higher Power (choose what you use) will send us the help we so desperately need when we need it. All we have to do is ask. Put the intention out there and the solution will present itself. It may not be clear when it arrives so don’t dismiss it because it’s not standard, traditional, or culturally/socially acceptable. But it will come. It always does.

I ask for help all the time. Sometimes it’s asked inwardly – as in prayer. Sometimes I just pick up the phone and start rattling off what I need. The method for putting your intention out there is irrelevant. Just get it out there. At some point every living, breathing human will need the assistance of another living, breathing human. It’s how we work. It’s how life works. It’s how LOVE works. Make it work for you!
